Stormwater filtration system, Nea Poteidaia, Greece
Aquabox was used in the construction of a stormwater management basin for the Thessaloniki - Nea Moudania - Potidea road axis project, enhancing road safety and easing long-standing congestion issues for both residents and tourists heading to Halkidiki.
The long-awaited project involved upgrading a local two-lane road into a high-speed four-lane route with adjacent MEP infrastructure. After many years of delays, it was completed in the summer of 2022, except for the final 1,12 km section.
An effective stormwater management solution was needed to ensure fast water removal and safe vehicle circulation on the remaining section. Our local partner Progetto, in collaboration with Enflow, the water treatment engineer, chose Aquabox. Its modular recycled plastic structure outperformed traditional systems by allowing:
- Flexible basin configurations of any shape and size,
- High durability under heavy vehicle loads,
- Quick and easy installation,
- 432-liter capacity per module,
- 96% void ratio,
- Reduced excavation volume.
With a total capacity of 1,550 m³, the Aquabox basin is the largest roadwork installation of its kind in Greece. Additionally, the Italian company Rototec supplied two Pollution Control Units (PCUs) to filter wastewater and remove debris, oil, and gasoline residues.
